Dominionists, NAR, Kingdom Now, Joel's Army

Post by spokenfor on Wed Feb 11, 2009 11:31 am

Lets talk about the Dominionists (Latter Rain, Kingdom Now, Joel's Army, New Apostolic Reformation, New Breed, Manifest Sons of God, Presence Movement)

There seems to be a lot of focus on the heresies of the Emergent Church but little attention paid to the Dominionists (other than the blip of the Todd Bentley revival and the occasional Patricia King nonsense). However this is a very fast-growing heresy.
“David Barrett, editor of the World Christian Encyclopedia reports 1,000 apostolic networks on record in his global database. These networks are found on six continents and account, by his estimate, for some 100 million believers worldwide. Dr. Wagner estimates that in the US alone there are as many NAR churches as there are Southern Baptist congregations – something approaching 40,000. Growth in the Third World among these churches far surpasses the more mundane statistics found in the West. Europe’s largest church is Manna Church in Lisbon, Portugal with 25,000 members. The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Brazil claims over 3 million congregants. The world’s largest congregations are now in Nigeria where the Church of Jesus Christ in Logos assembled 10-12 million people for its Holy Spirit service in December, 2000. The world has never seen this kind of church expansion!

This movement is so huge, I'm not even sure where to start in discussing it.

We could talk about Bob Jones, John Crowder, "DNA=divine nature activated"...anyone want to jump in?

Are there some sites you could link to. I was so narrowly focused on Reformed theology for so long that I am only vaguely familiar with some of these groups that you noted like Latter Rain, Manifest Sons of God and Kingdom Now and have basically no familiarity with the others.

Is the Dr. Wagner to whom you made reference C. Peter Wagner?

Yes. Dr. Wagner is C. Peter Wagner. He is the head of the New Apostolic Reformation. If you pay something like $650 a year, he names you an "apostle". (http://www.apostlesnet.net/) Apostles then have churches and ministries put under their leadership and "vision." According to Wagner, the church entered a second "apostolic age" around 2001. To be called an apostle is considered the highest title you can get in their vision of the Church.

The NAR folks are dominionists - in that they plan to take over the world - by force if necessary - to make it all their brand of Christianity, much like Constantine - or Muslims who force conversions. If you disagree with them, you are considered a "grey coat". (http://revivalschool.wordpress.com/2008/08/01/a-christian-civil-war-andrew-strom/)

They believe they are the chosen generation- by way of breeding! Much like the Indigo and Crystal Children of the New Age, they believe that those who are around age 20-45 have been chosen to open the way for those who are children/teens who will be part of Joel's Army (you know..the army of LOCUSTS!). They teach these children and young adults that they are superspiritual and will be able to walk through walls, raise the dead, etc.

They believe that either Jesus cannot return until THEY have conquered the world for Him and/or that the Church IS the re-incarnation of Jesus Christ.

Whether they would identify as such or not, this attitude is quite postmillenial, and has much in common with Christian Reconstruction and theonomy.

Thanks for the links as well! Lord willing, I will delve into some of this in our upcoming classes on cults, etc.

Such a high calling for such a low price.
