    Spiritual dullness.

Post by MrMerlin777 on Tue Mar 03, 2009 4:43 pm

I've been feeling quite dry lately. Scripture study and prayer seem a drudgery and unprofitable. I know this happens to all of us at times.

I'm interested in hearing the practical things that the members here do to "snap out of it". Mainly as I'm having a dickens of a time doing so this time around.

    Grace and Peace,

    Don.

I personally struggle with these same things everyday. You are not alone! A lot of my strife comes form the fact that I'm taking several classes right now, which are all on the Bible. Because of that I think I end up treating the Bible like a textbook and it becomes very dry. After I turn Scripture into outlines or neat little papers to get good grades there just seems like there is nothing left to be spiritually satisfying. I fear graduating and going to seminary one day!

The greatest thing that's worked for me in these times is to realize that my spiritual life isn't based on how 'spiritual' I feel. Even when I do not sense the presence of God I continue to pray and study scripture. I continue to pray in obedience. I've come to learn in profound ways what it means to 'walk by faith, not by sight'. It's a lot like being in that 'dark night', you just have to be mindful of that reformed adage...'after darkness, light'!!!

That's my 2 cents. I'd love to hear more opinions!

One thing that has helped me is to journal. When I feel spiritually arid, I write out a prayer to God in my journal, asking Him to give me a heart that yearns for Him.

The 4-5 podcasts per day I listen to at work help me a lot in this area.

It'd be nice if I could listen to pod casts etc at work but as I am a Lab Tech in the USN that is not possible.

I do write a bit and blog from time to time but I don't find that it helps me much in these times. I wish it did as it does seem to help alot of people to put thoughts on paper and computer screen.

Studying Scripture and praying with another Christian or other Christians is usually far more spiritual fulfilling for me. It gives me new perspectives when I can see how the Scripture is affecting other people's lives other than my own.

Right on Adam! I listen to podcasts or sermon downloads almost ever night at work. The machinery is so load you can't hear anyway so no one notices you have headphones on. Perfect environment.
